San Antonio, 1880. The Pearl Brewery opens, on its way to becoming the city’s largest employer and the leading brewery in Texas. Flash forward to 2001. For the first time in 118 years, the foam stops flowing. Abandoned and deserted, the Pearl Brewery—and all the excitement, pride, and economic momentum that came with it—is rendered meaningless. Its empty shell is left to rot in the heart of downtown.
But the story doesn’t end there. Soon, the riverfront property is reclaimed and repurposed as the centerpiece of the reimagined North River Walk neighborhood. And at 1803 Broadway on the site of a former brewery, an office tower rises with a unique challenge—the largest high-rise solar array in U.S. history.
Enter One80 Solar, a commercial solar company on a mission to create more clean, reliable, and renewable energy. Faced with having to battle high winds and scorching summer heat to cover the tower and six-story building with 2,912 solar panels (enough to generate 1 megawatt of electricity), Patrick Attwater and his team were up for the challenge.
